What's the difference between a hybrid and a string inverter
String or hybrid inverter? The key difference is the battery, and it matters most if you’re adding storage now or later.
What’s the difference between a hybrid and a string inverter?
A standard, solar-only string inverter converts electricity from your panels into electricity your home can use. A hybrid inverter also manages charging and discharging a compatible battery. Many hybrid inverters are also string inverters—the key difference is their battery capability.
Planning solar and a battery together? A hybrid inverter can handle both. Already have solar? You may be able to keep your existing inverter and add a battery with its own inverter, known as an AC-coupled system. Blackout protection is a separate consideration: it requires backup-capable equipment and the correct installation, not simply a “hybrid” label.
